What is Working Backwards?

Working Backwards is Amazon's product-development methodology. Instead of starting with technology and bolting customers on, you start with the customer experience and work backwards to what to build. Amazon has used it since 2004 to launch AWS, Kindle, Prime Video, and Echo.

How is this different from a business plan?

A business plan is a long internal document focused on financials and execution. Working Backwards starts with a press release written for your future customer — forcing clarity about who they are and why they would care. WorkBack AI runs your idea through 23 such artifacts.

Does it replace customer interviews?

No. WorkBack AI generates simulated interviews and hypotheses to give you a structured starting point. Real customer conversations are still essential — but you go in with much sharper questions.

Why is there no free trial?

Each project runs 23 Claude AI calls (Anthropic Sonnet 4), which costs us a few dollars in compute. A free tier would mean losing money on every signup. Instead, we put complete demo projects on the dashboard — browse one end-to-end, then pay (1 credit) only when you want one for your own idea.

Will my idea data be used to train AI?

No. We use Anthropic's Claude API, which doesn't train on customer inputs or outputs by default (per their commercial terms). Your project content stays in your account — we don't share it with third parties or use it for any model training.

What does Claude do here?

Claude reads your idea and produces structured outputs at every step — persona canvases, hypotheses, press releases, financial models. Each step has a strict output schema, so you get consistent artifacts you can edit, export, and share.
